Chapter Twenty-Two- Surprises and Singing

It’s the first day Drake and I are traveling with each other, and we’re on our way to the next town over. There’s a loud scream in the distance, beyond the trees.

“Stay here,” Drake says. “I’ll go check it out.”

“Like hell you are,” I say with my hands on my hips. “They obviously sound injured and need help.”

Drake sighs, “Okay, just stay behind me.”

I roll my eyes at him, and we head towards where the noise came from. There’s the sound of wings flapping and someone gasping for air. A large griffin comes into view, black as night with deep red eyes. One of its long talons are lodged inside the chest of a man. Blood pools around him, and he struggles to breathe. The griffin screeches loudly as we come into view and cocks its head to the side.

“I’ll kill it,” Drake says. “You help the man.”

I nod, and Drake disappears into a whirlwind of darkness before my eyes. It dissipates, revealing him to be a huge black dragon. He’s covered in spikes, and his scales seem to sparkle in the light. His big red eyes flick in my direction nervously, then he puffs up his chest and roars at the griffin. It hisses back, and Drake launches himself into the sky with the demon following.

I run to the injured man who’s on the brink of death. He’s very pale and has a massive hole in his chest that’s bleeding profusely. His face is sweaty, and his eyes look at me, full of fear.

“It’s alright,” I say soothingly. “You’re going to be okay now.”

“There’s nothing you can do,” he groans in pain. “No human can heal these wounds.”

“Luckily,” I say with a kind smile, letting my white wings burst from my shoulders, “I’m not a human.”

“A Blessed Angel,” he says in awe with wide eyes.

I nod and rest my hands over his chest. I focus my magic on stopping the bleeding and closing the hole. With a shimmery white light, his wound closes, and he lets out a loud sigh in relief.

“Y—you saved me,” he stammers, patting the spot where the hole used to be. “How can I repay you?”

“You don’t have to do anything,” I smile. “I’m just here to help.”

“I heard Blessed Angels are selfless and kind, but I—I never thought it was true,” he stutters.

I shrug. People worshiping me for who I am is not something I enjoy. It’s the main reason I came to Udaya.

Wings flap in the distance and there’s continued screeches. Suddenly, an animalistic scream pierces the air then a loud thud which shakes the ground.

Please let Drake be okay.

I’ve only known him for a day, but my stomach is twisted in knots at the thought of him being hurt or worse, dead.

Wings flap once more, and a black dragon comes into view above the trees. I let out a sigh of relief. I swear I can see his eyes widen in the distance at my wings. I realize he still doesn’t know what I am, and my stomach drops.
